Global Shifts, Local Impacts: Helping Clients Navigate the Age of “Buy Canadian”
How Career Development Professionals can support clients in a changing global economy

As Canada repositions itself in an increasingly unstable global landscape, Career Development Professionals are being called to think more strategically than ever before. Recent trade tensions, rising unemployment, and warnings of a potential recession have only heightened the pressure on workers, learners, and those who support them.

What does economic nationalism mean for your clients? How do you support jobseekers when cross-border mobility and sector stability are under stress? And how can you make sense of global labour market trends—without needing a degree in geopolitics?

This session will explore:

  • High-level global trends reshaping Canada's labour market
  • Emerging opportunities tied to national and economic resilience
  • Strategies to interpret and apply labour market information with confidence
  • Tools to help clients make informed decisions in a rapidly changing world

You’ll leave with practical resources and language you can use immediately in your practice—plus a renewed understanding of where Canada is heading, and how CDPs can help shape the journey.

Competency Framework Alignment:
This session supports the development of competencies in the CDPC Competency Framework, with a focus on:

  • Community Capacity Building (23.1–23.4)
  • Professional Responsibility (1.1 – Deliver Services Within Scope of Practice)
  • Career Resources (14.2 – Maintain Current Knowledge of Labour Market)
