Consider a Gap Year.

A gap year is not just a "year off school"; it is an intentional year away from formal education. When a gap year is engaged with purpose and intent, it becomes invaluable in the development of a person.

When youth are not sure what they want to study, or found themselves in a program they are unsure about, a year away can be very informative. But how can they do that?

First, a gap year is not necessary an entire 12-month period, could be shorter, could be longer. The key to a successful gap year is for the individual to make goals (work, travel, and/or volunteer) for part of or the entire year. As the goals are reached, reflection and evaluation are important for the next steps. It is important that the youth and their support network are open opportunities and pathways that will come as a result of the experience. The year does not need to be expensive and onerous; just intentional.
